Premiering Saturday, December 13th at 9pm ET/PT, the film follows journalist Laura Greenberg’s 40-year quest to uncover the motives of serial killer Doug Gretzler. But as she exchanges hundreds of hours of unheard audio tapes with Gretzler, the investigation evolves into something far more intimate—an all-consuming obsession that gradually blurs the boundaries between reporter and subject.

In 1973, 22-year-old Douglas Gretzler set out on a drug-fueled, spontaneous cross-country road trip that quickly escalated into one of the deadliest killing sprees in American history. Over just three weeks, he and his accomplice, Willie Steelman, murdered 17 people—only for the case to all but disappear from headlines. For decades, their motives remained a mystery, leaving victim’s family members, law enforcement and experts baffled and searching for clarity.
Years later, journalist Laura Greenberg begins digging into the story with a deep curiosity about the man behind the murders. As she sits down for exclusive, one-on-one interviews with Gretzler and his story unfolds, her pursuit takes a startling turn into an intense, deeply complicated relationship spanning several years—one that reshapes her investigation, her perception of Gretzler, and her sense of self.
Told through a staggering archive of secret audiotapes containing over 500 hours of intimate conversations between Greenberg and Gretzler, Charmed by the Devil unravels the darkest confessions of a mass murderer, the twisted psychology behind his crimes, questions of humanity and conscience after unthinkable acts, and the emotional toll of getting close with a serial killer.
